Self-Love is Ageless: Conturve’s Tips For Loving Yourself At Any Age
We don’t know about you, but we’re sick and tired of the representation of ageing women in our society. Think about it. Have you ever seen a menopause advert? It usually includes some kind of wilting flower metaphor to reflect the lost youth of a woman over a certain age—what a load of rubbish.

Ageing is as natural as breathing or sleeping, yet when women do it, society sees it as a tragedy. When women hit a certain age bracket, we constantly hear phrases like, ‘oh, she used to be so beautiful when she was younger’ or ‘she should dress her age’. We rarely hear the same tired tropes getting brought out when men mature.

With all this in mind, it can be hard to love your ageing beauty. But ageing is a blessing. The more time you spend on this Earth, the more knowledge you gain and the more opportunities you have. Ageing is amazing!

That’s why we’ve put together our top tips for how to truly fall head over heels with yourself regardless of how many candles you’ve got on your birthday cake!

Learn something new

Out of all the things to do to love yourself, learning a new skill is number one. Because who says that when you reach a certain age you stop taking up new hobbies? If anything, time slows down later on in life, giving you more chances to take up new practices that pique your interest.

Always wanted to speak Spanish? Find yourself a tutor. Love art and want to learn how to draw? Attend an art class. There are hundreds of ways you can continue growing and developing as a person when you’re older.

Plus, constantly learning new things and challenging yourself is good for your brain! According to scientific studies, learning a new skill actually changes your brain chemistry, improving performance and increasing the speed at which you can take on new information.

If that wasn’t a good enough reason to start a new hobby, scientists also suggest learning a new skill to help prevent dementia later on in life.

Move your body

Just because you don’t run as fast or hold a yoga pose for as long as you did when you were younger doesn’t mean you shouldn’t continue to enjoy moving your body. Staying active is essential for leading a healthier and happier life.

Sources show that physical activity can help improve your digestive function, your blood pressure, and can even stave off depression. Not to mention, taking up a new sport or physical hobby can be a great way to challenge your body and your mind.

Now, we’re not saying you should hit 60 and start training for a marathon. If your preferred physical activity is slow and steady, then take up pilates, go on a walk every day, or simply dance around the kitchen when you’re cooking dinner. Whatever you do, just make sure that you’re nourishing and caring for your body with movement.

Express yourself

Have you ever heard the phrase, ‘how is that tattoo/piercing/hairstyle going to look when you're older’? You probably have, right? Well, it just doesn’t make much sense to us. Who says that when you reach a certain age, you need to hand over your self-expression or tone down your unique style.

Personally, we believe the world needs more grandmothers in Doc Martens or mature women with fabulous, colourful hair. So, don’t ever be afraid to express who you are however it feels right for you!

Plus, this also refers to expressing yourself vocally. One of the great privileges of ageing is gaining the confidence to speak your mind. Don’t bottle up how you feel or be coy about what you want. Life is short, so you better carpe that bleedin’ diem.

Ditch things you don’t want to do

Alright, we know. There will be times when you’ll have to engage in things you really don’t want to do. That is life. But when it comes to your everyday life, you’re allowed to be picky about what you want.

This could be as simple as ditching a book club that no longer brings you joy, or even opting to only wear clothes that feel good on your body. Hate the feel of tight suit shirts? Get yourself some loose linen blouse instead. Loathe how painful and irritating wired bras are? Grab yourself one of our 24/7 Comfort Non Wired Shaper Bras.

They offer a natural level of support and lift, whilst the wide banding around your shoulders and back ensures no more worrying about back bulge and painful bra straps! Plus, they are so comfy, you’ll probably forget you’re even wearing a bra in the first place. Trust us; there is a reason we’ve opted to ditch the wired bra, for good!

Look back with a smile

One of the worst parts of growing older is how we’re expecting to think of our youth as lost. But this time wasn’t taken from us; we’ve simply grown. Our youth is still there, and we should always look back at our past selves with happiness.

Take pride in the years that have passed and never see them as having slipped out of your reach. Living with regrets is not fun. Love every part of who you were in the past because that person made you who you are in the present. Mistakes and all.

And make sure you relish your past experiences. Take pride in reminiscing on the times you snuck into concerts or travelled across the globe. And remember that just because you’re no longer in your twenties, doesn’t mean you’re done making fabulous memories.

In a society that often uses age as a weapon against women, be a rebel by loving your older beauty. Cherish every wrinkle that forms about your mouth and your eyes by remembering that it is years worth of smiling and laughing that left that line behind.

Continue to live your life to the fullest and be unapologetically you, no matter who is watching or what you believe people might think. And more than anything, love yourself with total confidence and abundance! You are your own soul mate.
